"The overall style of the hotel is a more contemporary interpretation of the glamour of the jazz age," explains Foers. "The points that the client was most insistent upon in their initial brief were 'Cotton Club' and ‘Duke Ellington' and so the aim of the design was to evoke the mood and feel of this era." Foers' main inspiration came from the music of Duke Ellington. These, along with other references to the period, are subtly integrated into the design in the form of materials, and artworks throughout the hotel, notably the framed sheet music hanging in the en suite bathrooms.
The hotel embodies all the elements of luxury with the design subtly paying homage to a bygone era by delivering a familiar story but with additional, unique
and quirky elements. The symphony between the bar and restaurant, through to the guestrooms, and right down to the musical melodies specially chosen for the
hotel by a music concierge, have created a genuine masterpiece.

Foers felt it was important to bring some human scale and intimate niches to the space, without screening off entire areas. She also felt it was important to add some warm and tactile materials to soften the cold, hard concrete and polished plaster finishes of the shell.
Budget was an issue, but this was dealt with by ingenuity and concentrating money on details that would make a difference. All the joinery, furniture and light fittings were custom designed.
'If you detail things carefully and think about materials, it's possible to create something glamorous that doesn't cost a fortune,' says Foers.
